A dress watch is the one that disappears under a shirt cuff and reappears at exactly the right moment. It is defined by restraint — a slim case, a clean dial, a leather strap or an elegant bracelet — rather than by features. The Anatomy of a Dress Watch
Slim Case
Classic dress watches sit under 12mm thick so the cuff slides over them. The Orient Bambino is listed at about 12mm with its domed crystal; the Tissot PRX at about 11mm despite its sportier bracelet. Diameter matters as much as thickness — 38–40mm suits most wrists. Sizing guide →
Clean Dial
Simple indices or Roman numerals, slim hands, at most a date window. The Bambino's domed crystal over a curved dial is the textbook vintage-dress look; the PRX uses applied indices on a textured dial for a modern read.
Leather or Integrated Bracelet
Leather (calfskin, or alligator-pattern) is the traditional choice and swaps easily for a different color. An integrated bracelet, as on the PRX, flows out of the case and cannot be replaced with a standard strap. Leather vs bracelet →
Two Tiers, Two Characters
Entry tier: the Orient Bambino
Orient has made the Bambino since the 1970s and builds its own calibers, which at this price is unusual. The Ver. 2 in our catalog has a white dial with blue hands on a brown leather strap, a 40mm case, hand-winding and hacking, and a domed mineral crystal that gives the dial its vintage profile. Its limits are honest ones: 30m water resistance and a mineral crystal that will pick up fine scratches over the years. Swiss tier: the Tissot PRX
The PRX is a 1978 design relaunched in 2021: a 40mm case with an integrated stainless steel bracelet, alternating satin and polished finishing, a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, 50m water resistance and the Swiss Powermatic 80 caliber. It reads as sporty-elegant rather than strictly formal, which is exactly why it has become a popular single-watch choice for the office. How to decide
- Formal wear, interviews, weddings: a slim watch on leather — the Bambino.
- One watch for everything from meetings to weekends: the PRX on its bracelet.
- Small wrist or strong preference for thin: both are 40mm; the Bambino's domed crystal adds visual height, the PRX's integrated lugs make it wear slightly larger than its diameter suggests.
